Before undergoing a breast enlargement procedure at Dallas, Texas, area Regional Plastic Surgery Center, our patients engage in a thorough consultation with their cosmetic surgeon. The consultation includes an examination of the size, shape, and skin elasticity of their breasts. If breasts sag, our plastic surgeon may recommend a breast lift procedure be performed in conjunction with the breast augmentation.
During the breast implants consultation at our Dallas area practice, patients should carefully describe their expectations to the cosmetic surgeon. How our patient wants her breasts to appear after breast enlargement surgery affects the size of the breast implants. Our Dallas, Texas, area surgeons will work with you to select, as well as the surgical techniques used during your breast augmentation procedure.
It is important to candidly discuss medical history including any previous breast surgeries or biopsies, any breast cancer in the family, and mammogram results. Although there is no evidence that breast implants cause cancer, there are procedural techniques our cosmetic surgeons can use to lessen the chances of breast implants interfering with future mammograms.
Because pregnancy and weight loss can change the shape of the breast, it is important to discuss any plans to engage in a weight loss program or to become pregnant. There is no evidence that breast implants negatively affect the ability to become pregnant, and women with breast implants may be able breast feed.
Based on the breast enlargement consultation, our patient and her cosmetic surgeon will determine the appropriate size of the breast implants. Our breast augmentation patients in the Dallas area can also consult our surgeons concerning placement of the breast implants; some may benefit more from placement beneath the chest muscle wall, while others may achieve better results with placement over the muscle.
Because of FDA regulations, only saline-filled breast implants are used in breast augmentation at our Dallas, Texas, area surgical facility.
Prior to the breast augmentation procedure, our cosmetic surgeon provides detailed preoperative instructions. Patients who smoke will be instructed to stop smoking well in advance of the breast augmentation surgery. Medications - such as aspirin - that are associated with bleeding should also be avoided. Patients may be asked to have a pre-surgical mammogram.

Breast enlargement is usually performed as an outpatient surgery. Our patients are under general anesthesia for the entire breast augmentation procedure. In the most common technique for breast enlargement, our Dallas area surgeons insert empty breast implants behind each breast and then fill them with saline solution. We use this technique because it requires only very small incisions. This may result in reduced and less visible scarring for our patients.
Incisions are made as discreetly as possible, usually underneath the breast near the crease, in the armpit, or in the areola area. Spaces are created for the breast implants either above or below the pectoral muscle. The empty breast implants are inserted into these spaces and filled with saline solution.
Most of our breast augmentation patients are up and about within a day or two and can shower within two to seven days. Stitches are usually self-absorbable and do not need to be removed. Bruising and swelling are common but fade away rather quickly. Residual swelling usually disappears in a few months. Although arm movements are restricted, most breast augmentation patients return to non-vigorous work and activities within a few days. Our cosmetic surgeon will decide when vigorous activities can resume.
As with any surgery, there are risks associated with breast augmentation. At our facility near Dallas, Texas, every possible precaution is taken to ensure patient safety and reduce the chances of complications occurring. Risks include bleeding, infection, and an adverse reaction to the anesthesia. Sensitivity of the breast or nipple may occur but usually returns to pre-surgical levels in a short time.
Once healing has occurred, breasts will be fuller and shapelier. Although saline breast implants will last a long time, eventually they will leak. Leaks sometimes occur because of trauma to the chest, but usually the breast implant simply wears out. When this occurs, the body simply absorbs the saline, which is merely a salt-water solution. Women with breast implants know when a breast implant has ruptured, as there is a noticeable change in the appearance of the chest area. If sagging or shape changes occur due to aging and gravity, additional surgery such as a breast lift can remedy this.
Most women are very happy with the results of their breast augmentation. We encourage you to view our gallery of breast enlargement surgery before and after photos.
